Fiber Artists

Pavlos Mayakis

The fiber arts coordinator at the Mendocino Art Center, he was the 2014-15 artist-in-residence there. His woven and painted shibori is full of life, and he teaches surface design as well as lining up the workshop teachers and managing the studio.

April Sproule

April has a beautiful quilting studio in Fortuna, California, and produces a line of stencils for fiber artists (with free tutorials on her website), as well being a patient, creative teacher and making her own wearable art and quilts.

Connie Rose

multi-faceted artist, one of my favorite pages is “Book Arts” but there are lots of other pieces of fiber arts, including some great discharge pieces in her “Art Quilts.”

Organizations

Mendocino Art Center

They have a wonderful variety of art classes in a beautiful setting.

Surface Design Associaton

This is a lively textile and fiber arts organization that publishes a beautiful magazine, and has regional member groups meeting around the country. If you click on “calendar” at the top, you will see a list of upcoming events, and you can click on a specific category, such as “competition deadlines” or “exhibitions” or “workshops” to sort them.

Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA)

Almost always known by its acronym (sack-kwaw), this organization puts together traveling exhibitions and offers its members lots of opportunities to have their work seen regionally, nationally and internationally.

Art Supplies

Solarplates

These are an amazing way to create relief printing plates from photo images, without caustic chemicals. There is also a book and DVD by Dan Welden.
